On Customer Service

I had to call Epson yesterday, as we bought a fancy inkjet printer to label DVDs for the Language Department at work. After printing about 200 disks, the thing won’t take CDs anymore. The guy I got helpfully informed me that 200 disks was an awful lot for this model, since it wasn’t a commercial unit, and we should really cut down a bit. But he was nice about it and still offered to send out a replacement printer (cross-shipped) and pay for shipping both the new one to us, as well as the old one back to them via FedEx. That is what I consider to be good service! Go Epson!

I may have mentioned this one before, but a while back the Goddess and I were in our local Canadian Tire store buying some stuff for the house. We’d been to a couple of other places in town and bought some paint and things, and when we left Canadian Tire to go home, a gallon of paint fell out of the back of my car and busted open in the parking lot. I was pretty torqued, since it was expensive paint, but I went inside and told the manager that there was a bit of a mess in her lot. Coincidentally, one of the girls there had been giving me a hard time earlier for not buying paint there, so needless to say she got some mileage out of my predicament! The manager was great though, and offered to replace my can of paint with a matching one, at a significant discount from the shelf price! They scanned in my paint chip and mixed up a gallon for me and it was $15 cheaper than the stuff I had spilled. Excellent service indeed.

Those of you who read our house blog know the story of our flooring and the nightmare that has been, but here’s a recap: We purchased 2400 square feet of “Lodgepole Pine” T&G flooring for the house from a company called Trout Creek Enterprises in Kamloops. We stopped by their mill beforehand and got some samples to play with stain on, and it looked great. So imagine my disappointment when it arrived and 40% of it was spruce! Long story short, they refused to refund or exchange it, I bullied them around, they grudgingly said fine, they dragged their feet until I was being held up in my project, I offered them a few cents for the spruce, they said fine, so that was that. In the meantime, they had to send me almost 600sf to replace what was damaged by the shipping company, but the stuff they sent was utter crap. I am pretty sure it was from at least three separate runs, so the edges didn’t match properly, and the drying was inadequate. I was pretty irritated, let me tell you. And to top it off, they still haven’t refunded me the amount we agreed on.

On the other hand, the shipping company (Bandstra Transport) has been fantastic. They readily admitted that it was their fault my flooring arrived damaged, and offered to pay the replacement costs (including shipping). As soon as I figured out the value of the damaged boards, they sent me a cheque, and they never once questioned my numbers or asked to take the product (which would have been fine, since they paid for it). Very excellent company to deal with, and I encourage anyone who’s looking at shipping large items to see if Bandstra can do it for you!
